Industry Performance: Retail Sales Data

August 8, 2004 Retail Sales Summary (Information Resources, Inc.)

Note: Beginning with the January 2004 IRI reports, NCA will no longer report Wal-Mart sales from IRI.

Note: Beginning with January 2004 sales reports, IRI is reporting net dollar sales including the effect of price reductions where consumers use frequent shopper cards. This effect has had a negative impact on dollar sales. Comparing dollar sales to the previous year will be misleading for the first six months of 2004 because IRI is currently comparing net sales inclusive of frequent shopper card discounts to net sales not including frequent shopper cards. This issue will be resolved with a restatement of IRI data in the summer of 2004.

IRI reports that retail confectionery dollar sales have increased 1.1 percent for the fifty-two week period ending August 8, 2004 in Food, Drug and Mass outlets excluding Wal-Mart stores. As noted above this increase is underreporting sales growth.
